2. Role Description

The role of a Business Analyst is to identify business issues or areas for improvement, document and articulate these to stakeholders and then support the implementation of any resulting solutions. The Business Analyst role sits adjacent to the Process Specialist and Functional Analyst roles and a Business Analyst must have awareness of process re-engineering and functional modelling. However, the key focus of the Business Analyst is capture, agree, manage and facilitate sign-off of requirements thorough gaining a detailed understanding of the client’s organisation and the context in which the consulting engagement has been initiated. This necessitates building a close working relationship with client to understand their needs, articulate solutions and implement changes.

A Business Analyst has to be able to understand and communicate the big picture but should also care about the detail.

Role Responsibilities
The specific responsibilities that relate to this role include:

Grade: S05

Business Analysis
• Investigates operational needs and problems, and opportunities, contributing to the recommendation of improvements in automated and non-automated components of new or changed processes and organisation
• Assists in defining acceptance tests for recommendations
• Evaluate and reconcile information gathered from multiple sources
• Decompose high-level information into details, abstract from low-level information to a general understanding
• Ability to build process maps in the support of analysis work
• Ability to support the preparation and delivery of workshops
• Looks for opportunities to take ownership of discrete pieces of work

Requirements Management
• Defines scope and business priorities for small-scale changes and may assist in larger scale scoping exercises
• Elicits and discovers requirements from operational management and other stakeholders
• Specifies and documents business requirements as directed, ensuring traceability back to source
• Analyses them for adherence to business objectives and for consistency, challenging positively as appropriate
• Works with stakeholders to prioritise requirements

Grade: S06

• Ability to lead a small team of Business Analysts (internal and/or client) working on a specific work area and coach others when needed
• Ability to perform stakeholder analysis, mapping influence, impact and commitment of each stakeholder
• Leads the client engagement for specific areas of work
• Take ownership of one or more areas of work including planning, identifying risks and regular reports to the project manager
• Ability to plan and facilitate effective workshops
• Applies company standard approaches on client engagements with assistance / direction, and takes the lead in specific areas

Business Analysis
• Investigates operational requirements, problems, and opportunities, seeking effective business solutions through improvements in automated and non-automated components of new or changed processes
• Effectively plan and manage the requirements process from capture through to change control
• Assists in the analysis of stakeholder objectives, and the underlying issues arising from investigations into business requirements and problems, and identifies options for consideration
• Identifies potential benefits, and available options for consideration
• Works with clients/users in defining acceptance tests

Requirements Management
• Facilitates scoping and business priority-setting for change initiatives of medium size and complexity
• Selects appropriate techniques for the elicitation of detailed requirements taking into account the nature of the required changes, established practice and the characteristics and culture of those providing the requirements
• Discovers and analyses requirements for fitness for purpose as well as adherence to business objectives and consistency, challenging positively as appropriate
• Obtains formal agreement by stakeholders and recipients to scope and requirements and establishes a base-line on which delivery of a solution can commence
• Manages requests for and the application of changes to base-lined requirements
• Identifies the impact on business requirements of interim (e.g. migration) scenarios as well as the required end position

Grade: S07

• Manage and lead a team of Business Analysts (internal and/or client) working across a number of workstreams and provide both direction and objectives
• Ability to manage the Risks and Issues arising on the Project and communicate as necessary
• Ability to lead the client engagement for all areas of business analysis activity

Business Process Improvement
• Capable of leading the process workstream of a major change programme (for example the creation of a new operating model), identifying how the process work depends on and influences the other dimensions of the change
• Analyses business processes; identifies alternative solutions, assesses feasibility, and recommends new approaches
• Contributes to evaluating the factors which must be addressed in the change programme
• Ability to direct work towards strategic aims or vision of the business
• Helps establish requirements for the implementation of changes in the business process

Business Analysis
• Takes responsibility for investigative work to determine business requirements and specify effective business processes, through improvements in information systems, information management, practices, procedures, and organisation change
• Proactively challenge business stakeholders to distinguish between user requests and genuine underlying business needs
• Applies and monitors the use of required modelling and analysis tools, methods and standards, giving special consideration to business perspectives
• Conducts investigations at a high level for strategy studies, business requirements specifications and feasibility studies
• Prepares business cases which define potential benefits, options for achieving these benefits through development of new or changed processes, and associated business risks
• Identifies stakeholders and their business needs
• Ability to direct work towards strategic aims or vision of the business

Requirements Management
• Facilitates scoping and business priority setting for large or complex changes, engaging senior stakeholders as required
• Determine and evaluate the most appropriate tools and notation to use for requirements management and process modeling; selects the most appropriate means of representing business requirements in the context of a specific change initiative
• Drives the requirements elicitation process where necessary, identifying what stakeholder input is required
• Obtains formal agreement from a large and diverse range of potentially senior stakeholders and recipients to the scope and requirements, plus the establishment of a base-line on which delivery of a solution can commence
• Takes responsibility for the investigation and application of changes to programme scope
• Identifies the impact on business requirements of external impacts affecting a programme or project
